Program Statement

GW's Higher Education Administration Program offers both a Master's degree and an EdD designed for future scholar-practitioners. The program’s location in the heart of the nation’s capital offers unique connections to higher education policy-makers, internships, and research opportunities. Graduates join an extensive network as engaged and thoughtful change agents who are committed to transforming campus communities through ethical leadership, improving student success, advancing inclusive living-learning environments through social justice advocacy, and integrating research and assessment in data-driven decision making.

The HEA Master’s degree (30 credits) prepares students for professional positions in student affairs, academic affairs, university relations, non-profit associations, and the federal government. The academic program integrates principles of practice, theoretical foundations, and a student-created inquiry theme to help students develop both depth and breadth in higher education knowledge and experiences. HEA students have the opportunity to deepen their expertise by selecting a concentration in Student Affairs Administration, General Administration, Higher Education Policy and Finance, or International Higher Education. Students also have the opportunity to gain professional experience during the program through fellowships and internships.

The HEA EdD (53 credits) prepares exceptional leaders for administrative, academic, and research positions in two- and four-year higher education institutions, national and international associations, government agencies, and other post-secondary educational settings. The HEA Doctoral degree has two phases: core courses on the foundations of higher education administration and a dissertation development sequence which builds the necessary skills for dissertation research. Core courses are offered one weekend per month, while electives and research methods courses are offered both monthly and weekly. The EdD provides a high-quality, fast-paced scholarly experience in which students can integrate theory and research seamlessly with practice.
